Liberals renew call to move year 7 into high school

The State Liberals have renewed calls for the Weatherill Government to transition Year 7
from primary school into high school.

The release of the latest Program for International Student Assessment reveals South
Australia’s education system continues to lag behind at a time when Australia is declining
internationally.

“South Australia is the only jurisdiction in Australia that still has Year 7 students in primary
school and has made no plans for a transition to high school,” said Shadow Minister for
Education John Gardner.

“It’s time that we prepare to bring our Year 7 students in line with the national curriculum.

“The national curriculum has a focus on specialist maths, science and english teaching for
Year 7 students.

“Moving Year 7 students into high school would ensure that our students are not left behind
their interstate counterparts.”
