Nice work if you can get it

The State Liberals have described the creation of yet another highly paid communications position in the Education Department as an obscene waste of taxpayer’s money.

“Jay Weatherill is going to pay a new spin doctor $360,000 a year - on top of the existing $4 million budget for the Education Department's existing Communications Department,” said Shadow Minister for Education John Gardner.

“To add insult to injury the contract for hiring this fat cat has been given to a Victorian human resources company that doesn’t even have an office in Adelaide.

“The ridiculous job description that accompanies this new position highlights what a total waste of money it is.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the new Executive Director Strategic Policy and External Relations will join a recently re-aligned senior executive team and play a vital role in facilitating the development of strategic policy and effective engagement with key partners of the Department.

This is an outstanding opportunity to provide proactive and collaborative leadership in the identification of strategic policy priorities and the development of insightful, innovative and practical policy solutions which are focused on achieving improved education outcomes for South Australian children and young people.

Further, this role will assume leadership for both internal and external communications.

“I’ve no doubt this new spin doctor, who will get paid more than the Minister, has been hired to reduce political damage stemming from the Government’s failed education policies,” said Mr Gardner.

“Last year’s NAPLAN results show South Australia was lowest or second lowest of all states in eighteen out of twenty categories.

“Rather than hiring spin doctors the Weatherill government should be putting year 7 in high school, increasing local school autonomy and tackling school truancy.”
